Little plastic replicas of the animals from the Chinese Zodiac were also passed out to attendees, which became the symbol of 12 groups for the men to join.

This Gathering was held in a most unusual setting. Most of the attendees were encouraged to bring tents, and the "CMG Tent City" was born! The site was a Buddhist retreat and community, with a huge, colorful laughing Buddha inside a gigantic cloth-covered temple, where the Community Gatherings were also held. The camp, built on a steep hillside, had few amenities and a small dining hall; it was indeed the smallest camp where the CMG has been held. This Gathering was held in a most unusual setting. Most of the attendees were encouraged to bring tents, and the "CMG Tent City" was born! The site was a Buddhist retreat and community, with a huge, colorful laughing Buddha inside a gigantic cloth-covered temple, where the Community Gatherings were also held. The camp, built on a steep hillside, had few amenities and a small dining hall; it was indeed the smallest camp where the CMG has been held. Despite its shortcomings, the camp provided an enormous spiritual energy, felt by all who attended.

Poor weather, a dwindling head count, and other problems, didn't overcome the camaraderie and joy felt by many of the participants. This was the last CMG to be held at Camp Marston. This was the first Julian CMG to have a unique logo design for the Gathering.

Like the Theme implies, this was a Gathering about joy, celebration, and fun! Large cut-out "Joy Boys" surrounded the swimming pool, which became one of the focal points of the Gathering. Two parties by the pool, as well as water-related workshops were conducted in or around the pool. Names of famous gay celebrities adorned each one of the cabins and the camp buildings.

This is the first CMG to be held at Camp Newman, which has become the "home" for our summer Gatherings. The 47th CMG, marking the 25th anniversary of the CMG, was all about taking charge of one's life, and preserving self-esteem despite the uncertainties of living.

Stevens offered great vegetarian cuisine, newer and remodeled cabins and meeting rooms, and a campus that had short distances between buildings, and advantage in the late fall, in Julian. For the 48th CMG, we were challenged to take risks over the weekend.
